Fund Raising Overview
SIMDE's fundraising activities fall into two separate categories; one that applies directly to the individual student, and one that supports the organization as a whole.
"Fair Share Credits"
These are credits earned by the student's activities towards their own participation fees and expenses. Please note, these are credits to the student's account, not payments directly to the student!
It is entirely possible for a student to raise enough credits to completely cover their participation fees, but doing so does require some pre-planning. Scrip sales for example generate credits over the course of the year, but you may not have enough to cover your first participation payment. On the other hand, you can certainly get family and friends to work shifts with you at the Bridge Pedal, making it more enjoyable for you, while doubling (or more) the number of credits you earn!
Examples of activities that provide Fair Share Credits include:
- Sales of scrip
- Shifts at the annual firework stand
- Shifts at the Bridge Pedal
- Shifts at the Portland Marathon
- Flower sales in the spring
- Returned Sponsorship Letters
"General Band Account"
The other fundraising category is used to support all the operations beyond the director (paid for by the school district): uniforms, field staff, flags, visuals, equipment maintenance, and many other things. While families and students may be most interested in raising their own Fair Share Credits, remember that it is this general account that subsidizes the participation fees; with out it, our fees would be higher (or our equipment and support much lower).
Examples of fundraising for the General Band Account include:
- A portion of the sales from the firework stand
- A portion of the sales from the Entertainment coupon books
- All proceeds from the annual auction
- All proceeds from the Southridge Spectacle of Sound competition
Refund Policy
SIMDE, Inc. is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization. It is against policy (and tax law) to refund ANY monies gained through fundraising opportunities. Should a student begin fundraising and leave the organization, that money CANNOT be refunded. It will be moved to the general account or can be used against a sibling's fees. If the student should raise funds OVER the required funds for a given year, those funds can roll forward to the next year's fees for the student or a sibling (if the student is a senior).
SIMDE Fundraising
Below are the fundraisers that are currently active. Please keep an eye on our home for the latest updates as some opportunities will be so short-lived they will not appear on this page (VTech testing for example).
The side bar contains more information on what is meant by "Fair Share" and "General Account" fundraising, as well as our refund policy. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact Linda Pederson for more information.
Scrip (Fair Share)
This program is available year round (including summer). In essence, you buy scrip (gift cards) in advance to stores you normally shop at anyway. The merchant then gives SIMDE a percentage of the value of the card applied to your student's account. Several students have raised their full participation fees through this method alone.
The first order form drop off date this year is September 11. Pick up will be on September 18. Remaining dates for 2009 are posted to the calendar. As in the past, drop-off needs to be by 2:30 (end of 5th period) and pick-up will be at 2:30 (after 5th period). This year pick-up will be on Fridays. If this is your first order, don't forget to submit your release form to allow your student to pick it up.
Current Scrip contacts are:
Sponsorship Letters (Fair Share)
Print out this letter and give it to anyone who you believe would be willing to help you. One-hundred percent of the funds you raise this way goes towards your Fair Share Credits. Several students have raised their full participation fees using this method alone.
Corporate Matching Gifts (General Account)
Because we are a 501(c)3 tax-exempt corporation, your funds paid to SIMDE can be matched by your employer To name only a few, Novellus, Wells Fargo, US Bank, Nike, Intel, Toys R Us, Bank of America, United Parcel Service (UPS), Xerox Corp, Tektronix, etc. Contact your employer's HR department for the necessary paper work.
